How Does a Testosterone Booster Work? The Claimed Mechanisms and the Evidence
Testosterone boosters claim several routes: correcting a mineral shortfall, acting on hormone signaling or helping blood flow. Evidence for each is thin or mixed in humans, and no study tested HoneyBoost. Zinc matters if you are short of it, but that is a deficiency fix, not a boost.

Which mechanisms do sellers point to?
Five stories get told, and each one attaches to a different ingredient.
No one mechanism defines a "booster," so sellers pick whichever story suits the ingredient. Here are the five, matched to the label lines.
| Claimed route | Label line | What the sources show |
|---|---|---|
| Fill a mineral gap | Zinc 2.5 mg | Matters for people who are low; says nothing about men who are not. |
| Nudge hormone signaling | Tongkat ali 25 mg | A meta-analysis found higher total testosterone in studies of one root extract. |
| Block an enzyme | Horny goat weed 10 mg | Shown in a lab dish with an isolated enzyme, not in men. |
| Act on dopamine | Mucuna 10 mg | A seed that holds a drug-like compound; one study in infertile men. |
| Help blood vessels | L-arginine 10 mg | Trials used grams, not milligrams. |
The category is also loosely policed. A 2024 review of 52 studies concluded that regulation was lax enough for sales to thrive without checks on the claimed benefits (Morgado et al. 2024).
What does the best evidence look like?
Strongest for one root, absent for most of the rest.
Tongkat ali has the most human data. A pooled analysis of five randomized trials found total testosterone was higher after Eurycoma longifolia, including in men with hypogonadism (Leisegang et al. 2022). The 2024 review rated the plant "possibly effective" but not maca (Morgado et al. 2024).
The enzyme story is weaker still. Icariin from horny goat weed blocked the PDE5 enzyme in a laboratory preparation (Dell’Agli et al. 2008). That is a test tube result about erections, not a measurement of testosterone in a man.
Ask three things of any mechanism claim: was it measured in people, with which extract, and at what amount per day?
Why does the amount decide everything?
A mechanism needs a dose, and the gummy lines are small.
The tongkat ali studies used 100 to 600 mg of extract a day. One gummy holds 25 mg, roughly 4% to 25% of that span, and a branded standardized extract is not the same thing as an unnamed 100:1 extract. Maca raises the same gap: the desire trial gave 1,500 or 3,000 mg of maca powder a day, and in that trial testosterone and estradiol did not differ from placebo (Gonzales et al. 2002). Desire improved anyway.
Quality is a second unknown. DNA testing of commercial tongkat ali products found 37% authentic and 27% adulterated (Abubakar et al. 2018). Without a lot-level lab report, a label name does not tell you what the root extract contained.

See packsWhat should a careful reader conclude?
Mechanisms are hypotheses until a trial of the same product tests them.
The FTC says health claims generally need randomized human trials, and that differences in extracts can mean large differences in effect (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance). No trial tested HoneyBoost. A higher total testosterone number is also not the same as a better result in daily life, and the AUA calls a man deficient only when low levels and symptoms appear together, a call a clinician makes (AUA, Testosterone Deficiency Guideline).
One safety note belongs with the mechanism talk. Mucuna is standardized to 98% L-DOPA, the compound in the drug levodopa, so anyone on an MAO inhibitor or a Parkinson medicine should ask a pharmacist first (MedlinePlus, Levodopa and Carbidopa). Keep taking every prescribed medicine.

FAQ01
HoneyBoost questions people ask
Can a plant extract change total testosterone?
In some trials of one tongkat ali extract, yes, but the amounts studied are well above one gummy and no trial tested HoneyBoost.
Is the zinc in a gummy a booster?
No. Zinc is an essential mineral, and the label shows 2.5 mg per gummy. It matters mainly for people who are short of it.
Why do ingredient pages cite lab studies?
Because many claims start in cells or animals. A result in a dish shows a possibility, not an effect in men.
Does HoneyBoost have a proven mechanism?
No. No study tested the gummy, and the label prints no directions, so this site states no dose or timeline.
