L-Arginine in HoneyBoost: 10 mg per Gummy Against 5 g in Trials

Quick answer

HoneyBoost lists L-arginine at 10 mg per gummy. The main trial in men with ED used 5 g a day, which is 500 times more, and found a subjective gain with no objective change. Reviews of marketed ED supplements find most use negligible doses.

L-arginine is an amino acid. Your body makes it, and you eat it in meat, fish, dairy and nuts. It is a building block for nitric oxide, a molecule that relaxes blood vessels, which is why it is sold for blood flow and erections. That link is real biology, but a supplement that raises arginine does not always raise nitric oxide in a useful way.

The panel lists "L-Arginine" at 10 mg per gummy, with no Daily Value established. The label does not say whether it is L-arginine hydrochloride or the free form, and it prints no purity.

What does the research say?

What exists, at what dose, and how it compares with the gummy.

L-arginine is the best supported ingredient on the panel, at a very different dose. In a double-blind trial, 50 men with organic ED took 5 g a day for 6 weeks; 9 of 29 (31%) on L-arginine and 2 of 17 on placebo reported a subjective improvement, and every objective measure stayed the same (Chen et al. 1999). A 2024 network meta-analysis of 15 trials found that, against a background of mostly ineffective nutraceuticals, L-arginine was of some usefulness, especially with prescription ED drugs (Barbonetti et al. 2024). A 2023 review of marketed ED supplements found that most use ingredients at a negligible dose (Petre et al. 2023).

One gummy has 10 mg. The trial used 5,000 mg a day. That is 500 times more, and the gummy holds about 0.2% of it. The label amount is a rounding error beside the studied dose. This is the clearest example of the pattern the 2023 review describes: a real ingredient present at a negligible dose.

  • Maca extract

the studied amount is 240 times the label amount

Label: 10 mg per gummy. Studied: Dry extract, 2,400 mg a day for 12 weeks in men with mild ED. (Zenico et al. 2009)

  • Tongkat ali extract

the studied amount is 4 times the label amount

Label: 25 mg per gummy. Studied: Standardized root extract, 100 to 600 mg a day, mostly one branded extract. (Leisegang et al. 2022)

  • L-arginine

the studied amount is 500 times the label amount

Label: 10 mg per gummy. Studied: 5,000 mg (5 g) a day for 6 weeks in men with organic ED. (Chen et al. 1999)

  • Zinc

the studied amount is 4.4 times the label amount

Label: 2.5 mg per gummy. Studied: The adult male RDA and label Daily Value is 11 mg a day (not a study dose). (NIH ODS, Zinc)

Label amount, per gummyAmount used in the study (or the daily need, for zinc)

Log scale: each step to the right is ten times more. The label does not say how many gummies make a day, so one gummy is shown. A studied dose says what was tested, not what works for you, and no study tested HoneyBoost. Horny goat weed, damiana and mucuna are left out because we found no human dose that can be set beside the label.

What does arginine have to do with nitric oxide?

The body uses arginine to make nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels.

That link is why it is sold for blood flow. But eating more arginine does not always raise nitric oxide in a useful way, and the body has its own supply. The prescription ED drugs work on a later step in the same pathway. This is the reason a 2024 network meta-analysis found L-arginine of some use in combination with prescription drugs, and little on its own (Barbonetti et al. 2024).

How big a gap is 10 mg against 5 g?

A 500-fold gap.

To reach 5 g from gummies at 10 mg each, a man would need 500 gummies a day. That is impossible and unsafe, and nobody should attempt it. The comparison is not a how-to. It shows that the 10 mg on the label is a token amount, in line with what a 2023 review of marketed ED supplements found (Petre et al. 2023).

What are the cautions?

Who should ask a clinician or pharmacist first.

At 10 mg the arginine in a gummy is unlikely to matter either way, but the broader point stands: any product sold for erections should be checked against your medicines. Nitrates, ED drugs and blood pressure medicines can all lower blood pressure, and FDA warns about the combination of hidden ED drugs and nitrates (FDA, Sexual Enhancement and Energy Product Notifications). Ask your pharmacist if you take any of them.

A short list of who should ask first: people on nitrates or other heart medicine, on blood pressure medicine, on ED drugs, on MAO inhibitors or Parkinson medicine, on diabetes medicine (damiana may affect blood sugar), on aromatase inhibitors or other hormone or cancer medicine, and on tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics (zinc can lower their absorption). People with heart disease, a hormone-sensitive condition, or a psychiatric condition should ask as well.

Stop and ask a clinician if a rash, swelling, a racing or irregular heartbeat, dizziness, a strong headache, stomach upset that does not pass, mood changes or trouble sleeping show up after you start. These are listed under the ingredients' cautions, and they are the reason the label tells you to speak to a physician. You can report a problem with any supplement to FDA through MedWatch (FDA, MedWatch).

What should you take away?

The label amount is small, no study tested the gummy, and your medicines come first.

A 2023 review of marketed ED supplements scored 25 products and found that 20 (80%) matched the criterion of no expected efficacy, mostly because ingredients were used at a negligible dose or without evidence (Petre et al. 2023). The same review found L-arginine, Panax ginseng and Tribulus terrestris could improve male sexual function in trials. HoneyBoost contains none of the last two and only a trace of the first.
