HoneyBoost Ingredients: What Is in Each Gummy, and How Much

Quick answer

HoneyBoost lists seven active-type lines per gummy: zinc 2.5 mg, maca 10 mg, horny goat weed 10 mg, damiana 10 mg, tongkat ali 25 mg, mucuna 10 mg and L-arginine 10 mg. The rest is sugar, corn syrup, water and pectin. Each ingredient is covered below.

Written by the HoneyBoost label deskUpdated

What are the HoneyBoost ingredients?

Seven lines have amounts on the panel. The rest of the gummy is a sugar and pectin base.

Here are the seven lines with amounts, exactly as printed. Zinc (as zinc gluconate) is 2.5 mg, which is 23% of the Daily Value. Maca root extract 10:1 is 10 mg, equivalent to 100 mg maca root. Horny goat weed extract 8:1 is 10 mg, equivalent to 80 mg. Damiana leaf extract 5:1 is 10 mg, equivalent to 50 mg. Tongkat ali root extract 100:1 is 25 mg, equivalent to 2,500 mg. Mucuna seed extract is 10 mg, standardized to 98% L-DOPA (9.8 mg). L-arginine is 10 mg. The six plant and amino acid lines add up to 75 mg.

The other ingredients are sugar, corn syrup, water, pectin, citric acid, natural flavor, guar gum, tapioca starch, sodium citrate and artificial color. No honey is listed, so the honey in the name and the honey flavor on the label are not backed by a honey ingredient we can see. The label does not print the amount of any other ingredient.

Compared
About 0.4% of the 2,400 mg extract dose
Evidence
Limited: four small trials in a 2010 review; no change in testosterone in the men's trial
Watch for
Tell a clinician if you have a hormone-sensitive cancer, and before testosterone lab tests (maca may interfere with immunoassays)

Damiana leaf: 10 mg per gummy

On the label
Damiana (Turnera diffusa) Leaf Extract 5:1: 10 mg, equivalent to 50 mg damiana leaf.
Used in research
No human trial of damiana alone for male sexual function found; the human studies in the review used mixed products
Compared
No studied dose to compare

Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) Root Extract 100:1: 25 mg, equivalent to 2,500 mg tongkat ali root.
Used in research
100 to 600 mg a day of a standardized root extract, mostly one branded extract, for 3 days to 6 months (blood testosterone, mood)
Compared
About 4% to 25% of the 100 to 600 mg studied range
Evidence
Some support for blood testosterone in small trials; none for this gummy; product purity varies
Watch for
Products vary: in one DNA test only 37% of tongkat ali products were authentic

Mucuna pruriens seed: 10 mg per gummy

On the label
Mucuna (Mucuna pruriens) Seed Extract, standardized to 98% L-DOPA (9.8 mg): 10 mg, 9.8 mg of it printed as L-DOPA.
Used in research
Seed preparations in small studies of male fertility and Parkinson disease; the abstracts we read give no dose that can be set beside 10 mg
Compared
No comparable studied dose in the abstracts read
Evidence
Limited: small, unblinded fertility data; the seed's levodopa content is real
Watch for
L-DOPA is the drug levodopa: do not combine with MAO inhibitors, Parkinson, psychiatric or blood pressure medicines without a pharmacist's advice; 7 of 14 people stopped the seed powder early in one study
Full Mucuna pruriens seed page

L-arginine: 10 mg per gummy

On the label
L-Arginine: 10 mg.
Used in research
5,000 mg (5 g) a day for 6 weeks in men who already had erectile dysfunction; benefit was subjective only
Compared
About 0.2% of the 5,000 mg studied
Evidence
Some support in men who already have ED (network meta-analysis), mostly at gram doses, and best with ED drugs
Watch for
Ask a pharmacist about nitrates, ED drugs and blood pressure medicine before taking arginine
Full L-arginine page

Zinc: 2.5 mg per gummy

On the label
Zinc (as zinc gluconate): 2.5 mg; 23% of the Daily Value.
Used in research
The adult RDA is 11 mg a day for men (the label's Daily Value); the upper limit is 40 mg a day
Compared
23% of the 11 mg Daily Value
Evidence
Established as a nutrient; this site found no source that zinc supplements raise testosterone in men who are not low in zinc
Watch for
Too much zinc causes problems (the upper limit is 40 mg a day from all sources); zinc may reduce the absorption of quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics
Full Zinc page

Seven tabs, one per line on the Supplement Facts panel: 10 + 10 + 10 + 25 + 10 + 10 = 75 mg of extracts and L-arginine, plus 2.5 mg of zinc, per gummy. Tap a tab to open it. No study tested the gummy.

Each ingredient has a full page: maca, horny goat weed, damiana, tongkat ali, mucuna pruriens, L-arginine and zinc.

How do the label amounts compare with studies?

Every extract line is far below the amounts in human studies.

Dose is the whole story in supplement research. A plant can show an effect at 2,400 mg a day and nothing at 10 mg. Before you accept a claim, ask what amount the study used and compare it to the amount on the label. The dose ruler on this site does that comparison for each ingredient.

What do the ratios on the label mean?

A ratio such as 10:1 says how much raw plant went into the extract. It does not say how strong the extract is.

The label gives each extract as a ratio, such as 10:1 for maca and 100:1 for tongkat ali, and then a "root equivalent" in milligrams. A ratio says how much raw plant went into making a unit of extract. It does not say how much of any active compound is in the gummy. Only the mucuna line gives a standard (98% L-DOPA, 9.8 mg). Studies mostly used extracts that were measured for a marker compound, so the comparison is rough (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).

Is any ingredient a drug?

One line needs care. Mucuna is standardized to 98% L-DOPA, the same compound as the drug levodopa.

The panel lists "Mucuna (Mucuna pruriens) Seed Extract" at 10 mg per gummy, "standardized to 98% L-DOPA (9.8 mg)." That means nearly all of the 10 mg is L-DOPA. It is the only line on the panel with a stated purity, and it is a drug-strength compound rather than a flavor-level herb.

Mucuna is the line that needs a second look. It is standardized to 98% L-DOPA, the same compound as the drug levodopa. MedlinePlus tells patients who take levodopa to name any MAO inhibitor they use (MedlinePlus, Levodopa and Carbidopa). If you take an MAO inhibitor for depression or Parkinson disease, or any Parkinson, psychiatric or blood pressure medicine, ask a pharmacist about mucuna before the first gummy.

What else is in the gummy?

Most of a 4.2 g gummy is sugar, corn syrup and pectin.

A gummy is a candy-like format. It carries sugar and a gelling agent, and each piece can hold only a small amount of active material, so large doses need many pieces. HoneyBoost's gummy weighs 4.2 g, and its six active-type lines add up to 75 mg, under 2% of the weight.

The allergen line says the gummies are packaged in the same facility as peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy and milk products. That is a cross-contact notice, not an ingredient list. If you have a serious food allergy, read the line on your own bottle and ask the distributor how the gummies are handled.

How should you judge an ingredient list?

Use five checks, in this order.

To read any supplement label, check five things. First the serving size and the count. Second each active amount in milligrams. Third whether an amount is a plant extract and which ratio. Fourth the directions and warnings. Fifth the maker's name and phone. HoneyBoost's label gives the first three and the fifth in part, but no directions.

  • Is each amount printed in milligrams?
  • Does a study use a similar amount of a similar extract?
  • Does the label name the species and part of the plant?
  • Are cautions printed?
  • Does the maker give a lot number and a lab report?
